What is Clinical Nutrition?

Stephen Roigard

Clinical Nutrition is the study of the relationship between the food consumed and wellbeing. A Clinical Nutritionist assists individuals with their health concerns by tailoring nutrition and lifestyle recommendations to their needs. Therapeutic grade dietary supplements may also be recommended.

Before and during the consultation a Clinical Nutritionist will take a detailed case history, asking questions regarding medical history, family history, and dietary, lifestyle and exercise habits. As much information as possible is gathered in order to construct a holistic view of the client’s state of health.

Clinical Nutritionists are trained in functional testing and analysis and if deemed appropriate, they may suggest this as part of the information gathering process.

To qualify for CNA registration, Clinical Nutritionists must have years of tertiary training at an approved institution including hundreds of hours of clinical practice, and undertake annual continued professional development and education.
